hi Emma my name is Evelyn and i was diaognosed with RA last april.I had sever lower back pain and my consultant said that it was osteoarthritus as RA does not affect the back so that may be the problem you have. But please find out from the medics best wishes Evelyn

Hi Emma,

I am Lorna, I think you may have sciatica, but the doctor will be able to advise you better. I suffer from this from time to time and the pain is really sore. When I was ill 3 years ago there was not a joint not affected and I couldn't straighten my back due to the pain, or turn my head and I had lost the use of my right arm. Don't despair I am as well as could be expected now due to the triple therapy. Also my back is fine, don't worry about RA until it is proven too be so with your back. Things do sometimes get better, try not to worry.

Thinking about you

Hi Emma,

Sorry to hear you are in such pain.
I get lower back pain occasionally which my GP says is inflammation of the sacro-iliac joint, caused by .....yes, RA !
However, you can also get lower back pain with a kidney infection so if it doesn't ease off soon or if you develop a raised temperature you should see your GP.

Love, Doreen xx

hi

I have a lot of lower back issues now- mostly from when i had Bernie- but it can be the RA in the sacro illac joint.

As for the hip pain- it is normally felt in the groin.
Sometimes it is to do with posture... the hips hurting can put strain on your back because you stand/ walk/ move/ sit in a funny way.

I dont know which dr is telling you the back cannot be affected by the RA? ANYWHERE the immune system effects, the RA can effect.

One more possible thing to consider is fibromyalgia- some of the special areas of fibro are in the lower back and make me shout when touched! have a look at this site for more information about it- www.fibrohugs.com

Heat treatments can really help as well as good pain relief.

Hi Emma

As others have said RA can affect the back and is often related to long term poor posture which does not support the joints in the lower back and particularly the sacro-iliac joint. First port of call should be your GP who can rule out other possibilities and then refer you for X-Ray, possible physio and prescribe better pain relief.

Good luck, hope the pain eases soon.

Oh Laws, I've started to get lower back pain recently. I've never had a problem with my back but lately I get pains like a deep, sickening ache. It's a bit like period pains but lower. I wondered if it was kidney problems but I had those when I was young and can remember the pain! It's definitely not that.

Something else for me to investigate then! Sad

Hi, it's interesting to read you have lower back pain. I have had pain in the lower back and now both hips and down my left legs over the last week. I am on strong pain killers but they don't seem to be touching it. The pain feels like very bad cramp and the muscles in by legs feel incredible tight.Last night i as unable to sleep and spent a lot of time standing up to try and ease the pain because when i lay down the pain increased . I have recently been given two infusions of steroids and am just about to chane from 20mg MTX orally to self injection. Any advice about leg and hip pain would be welcomed . The pain feels like it is actually coming from my muscles and blood vessels so i am very confused. Thanks again for all your help.
